Composer Ambassador for MADE-BY

Music, fashion and sustainability - everything is interconnected. As such, The GIN Lady welcomes the latest ambassador in tune with MADE-BY, the not-for-profit organisation that supports sustainable fashion worldwide. Today, the talented and innovative cellist and composer Peter Gregson became an ambassador for MADE-BY. In his ambassadorial role Gregson will use his vocation and contacts to help spread the not-for profit organisation’s message that sustainable fashion can become common practice.

Young (1987), ultra talented and modern (even a festival via Twitter!), Peter Gregson will broaden the appeal of sustainable fashion to a different crowd of folk. This can only be a good thing so hats off to MADE-BY for such an innovative partnership. According to the lovely folk at MADE-BY, Gregson has always held sustainability close to his heart. Instilled by reuse and recycling values by his family, Gregson has carried this through into his music, including the instruments he plays. He currently uses a Colin Irving acoustic cello and a custom five string Eric Jensen electric cello. A new cello is now being custom built for him from sustainable materials and will take around five years to complete from start to finish. We'd like to see this in action! Gregson shared "My electric cello is made from deeply figured curly maple that was taken from a 150-year old house in the middle of America." He adds "My new acoustic cello is being made with similar environmental mindfulness. It is a fascinating process which takes a considerable amount of time."

Gregson has already clocked up considerable success having made several UK and US tours. And as a pioneer of contemporary music, Gregson was commissioned by Bowers & Wilkins to record an album of original music for acoustic and electric cellos for its Society of Sound label. A label that is curated by Peter Gabriel and Real World Studios and by the London Symphony Orchestra, the album, Terminal, was released on 1 April. Now that he's added sustainability firmly to his bow, this album is now definitely on our shopping list!

MADE-BY, founded in 2004, is a not-for profit organisation currently working with 34 international fashion brands, in response to rising consumer concern in Europe over social and environmental issues in the fashion industry. MADE-BY has had a significant and growing impact on the sustainable fashion industry in Europe since its launch.

Not only are they animal friendly, their vegan sandal soles are upycled and handcut from old tyres! Literally from the road, De La Rue have succeeded in designing a cool funky sandal that we wouldn't mind walking the talk in...

Magical T-Shirts at EJF

Photographed by Eric GuillemainWith Alice in Wonderland all the rage at the moment, showing at cinemas across the land, today we'd like to share an equally magical story as illustrated by hot designer Alice Temperley. Exclusively for one of our favourite charities, the Environmental Justice Foundation, we can now wear our hearts on our sleeves with Alice’s message “Dreaming of a magical future”. Alice Temperley's colourful print on 100% organic cotton is designed around the theme of “childhood, lost innocence and hope” to represent more than a million children around the world forced to labour in cotton production and the severe environmental impacts of the industry. Even better, the money raised by EJF from the sale of the t-shirts goes to support the charity’s valuable work - so now is the time to treat yourself to an organic tee that's not only stylish, it'll make a huge difference too!

Alice Temperly says "We are all becoming increasingly aware of what surrounds us and the effects of the ‘mass productions’ of our time. We need to address how it effects people, often children, who are forced into this simply by having no other choices available to them. I wanted to make this T shirt to help those poor innocent children with no way out, no dreams of their own and in order to highlight the chronic and severe exploitation across the industry."

Ella Georgia Jewellery on the High Street

Ella Georgia Jewellery whose online store specialises in Jewellery With Heart has just celebrated the launch of their first retail store on the High Street - hurrah! At the weekend there was much buzz at 10 Fishergate, Boroughbridge in Yorkshire, when their first gallery was opened by dishy actor Hugo Speer. Many may feel opening a new store is a brave move in this current credit crunch climate, but for us this signals yet another smart move.... more ethical buys at a local level.
