Summer Festivals in Eco Friendly Style
Now that Glastonbury is over, you're hungry to make the most of your summer and this year is proving fast to be the Summer of all Festivals.
Here is The GIN Lady's Eco Stylish Festival Guide. We put bedding, lotions & potions, style essentials, important odds and sods as well as the hottest festival destination for 2009 in the spotlight. Let the music begin...
SLEEP WELL
Getting your beauty sleep is a tad difficult at a festival but not if you do it in style. Myhab is the luxury festival accommodation and it's definitely the eco option, as several thousand tents are abandoned each year, destined for landfill. Made from recycled parts, the 2 person myhab tent comes with a load of comfy extras, soft bedding and is hassle free. At your service at several summer festivals, myhab gets the big thumbs up. Alternatively, if you don't plan on making a tent an orphan, then Green Outdoor offers a fabulous range of sustainable tents. And if it's a sleeping bag or outdoor gear you're after, look no further than the Ethical Super Store.
LOTIONS & POTIONS
You'll want to avoid sun-burnt, mossie-bitten skin at all costs if you really want to enjoy the summer festival season. One brand we've tried and tested is Incognito - the natural insect repellent company - and we can't recommend them enough! Forget DEET and all the other chemical nasties that get absorbed by your skin - really! - Incognito works a treat, and their product range is getting bigger all the time. They recently launched an after-sun moisturiser with repellent activity. Perfect. And the great thing is that Incognito is non-greasy and smells just fine! But when it comes to organic sun care for both you and the kids, you can't go wrong with Green People. Top notch products!
STYLE ESSENTIALS
A relaxed look is perfect for the festival season, but you've still got to look great - this is your identity we're talking about afterall! We love Komodo for both men and women: Eco credentials, tick. Style, check. Take their Festival t-shirt made from hemp for instance. Available in Yellow or Grey, Komodo's tee is perfect for the festival season! If you're after a smashing pair of sandals, then read our top ten eco friendly sandals post. We've also put our favourite eco swimwear designs and eco friendly sunglasses in the spotlight too. If you're looking to clothe your kids for the festival season - yes, kids are definitely welcome - then look no further than Cambridge Baby - they have some super sun hats for little ones! If you're looking for a good all rounder for everyone, then Howies or Seasalt are sure bets too... But remember, dress for warm and cold weather... and don't forget your wellies!
THE GREEN MAN FESTIVAL
The definitive guide to festivalling listings has to be eFestivals - they are carbon neutral and support Water Aid - nice one. But the word on the street is The Green Man Festival is the biggest up and coming festival to visit, particularly as our favourite, Hydro Connect isn't taking to the stage this year. The Green Man is perfect for everyone, with truck loads of stuff for kids too. Even better it's set in Glanusk Park in the heart of the Brecon Beacons. Magical! Against the majestic backdrop of Sugar Loaf mountain, the amphitheatre will stage a big round up of music artists - check the line up here and inside a fairy-tale circus tent you'll discover emerging talent. And then there's the Stables Bar to soak up the vibe and a campfire field for general bonhomie. The Green Field will also hold a solar-powered milk float stage, and the chance to exchange ideas, whether musical, environmental or humourous. And while drink is on tap 24/7, you'll love tucking into locally sourced organic food to fuel the dancing. We're going... how about you?!
ODDS & SODS
C'mon, fair play! With all this fun, booze and fresh air, if you've got the right tent, then a little action could come your way. Don't forget to pack the all important Fair Trade Condoms! Other essential odds & ends to pack are a sustainable torch, recycled loo paper, a sun hat and if you're wondering how you're going to keep your mobile charged up over the whole event, then look no further than Vikki Chowney's advice, our new Green Tech editor. Green Tech is a must-read for all gadget loving folk!
Have a wonderful festival season!
